Today, the rise in childhood obesity has several causes. The main cause of obesity is certainly children eating too much and/or not performing regular exercise or being generally inactive. The extra calories that are not able to burn up through exercises or physical activities will translate into fat, and when this fat becomes excessive and more, one will become obese. This difference results in weight gain and will vary from children to children that was due to few factors such as genes, health issues, physical inactivity as well as psychological issues also contribute to weight gain and may be what the causes of obesity are.Effects:Child obesity is an increasingly prevalent disease. Since 1960 child obesity has risen 54%; some experts estimate the overall prominence of child obesity to be as high as 34.7% of all children ages 3-11.Child Obesity is the leading cause of Pediatric Hypertension and is associated with type 2 diabetes and Coronary Heart Disease, the leading cause of death in America according to the American Heart Organization. While obese children generally tend to have poor body images, this is not helped by all the teasing that they tend to have to endure at school and in other social situations with their peers. A lot of times, obese children will skip school or drop out altogether in order to avoid having to confront their peers’ teasing head on.One of the biggest concerns in recent years has been the rising number of children afflicted with type 2 diabetes – a disease that previously mainly afflicted adults. In the course of the last two decades, the statistics of children and adult afflicted with this disease have risen to fifty percent. Today, nearly thirty percent of all adults and twenty five percent of all children struggle with obesity. What’s more, children who are obese often develop into obese adults.Being overweight can cause:Low self-esteem and bullyingBehavior and learning problemsStress and anxietyComfort eatingDepression Some children and teens eat more than usual when they are bored, angry, or stressed. Over time, the overeating leads to weight gain and tends to bring on obesity. Some children overeat to cope with problems or to deal with emotions, such as stress or boredom. Children who experience psychological abuse from their peers often develop extremely low self-esteem, which may eventually evolve into depression. Obese children often feel isolated and lonely.Obesity generally starts in childhood and continues in to adulthood. While medical conditions and hormone imbalances are often blamed as causes for obesity, the fact remains that these conditions account for less than one percent of all childhood obesity cases. Nor can the problem be blamed completely on genetics, because oftentimes the problem has more to do with the family’s behavior when it comes to eating habits and exercise.Child Obesity SolutionsThis means making changes in overall lifestyles from eating habits to physical activity. Depending on the age of your child use caution when deciding on a formal weight loss diet program. The good news is that with education and proper guidance, the child obesity statistics can come back down and our kids can enjoy a healthier and happier lifestyle.

Obesity has been receiving a lot of media attention recently with statistics showing that the problem is increasing at an alarming rate. Historically obesity has been exclusively seen as a problem of adults, becoming more prevalent with advancing age, however with children’s lifestyles becoming less and less active due to a number of factors, obesity in children is also on the rise. There have always been fat children but they were always an exception to the norm. Indeed fat children have been recognised in literature throughout the generations, with Charles Dickens’ portrayal of the fat boy in The Pickwick Papers and Billy Bunter in the 20th century. However, they were notable because fat children were a rarity. Obesity is no longer uncommon in children and the problem of childhood obesity is spiralling out of control. In fact the problem is becoming so bad that there are now fears the current generation of children may be the first for centuries in whom their life expectancy will be lower than their parents. Considering the extent to which life expectancy levels increased over the 20th century, this is a substantial reversal.
· The Health Survey for England 20021 states that 16% of boys and girls aged 2 to 15 are obese with a total of 30% classified as either overweight or obese. A third of young adults are either overweight or obese (32% of young men and 33% of young women). In addition, 9% of young men and 12% of young women are actually obese.
· Several factors have now been shown to predict the development of obesity in individuals such as a family history of obesity, lifestyle, diet and socioeconomic factors.
Causes of Obesity in Childhood
There are a variety of factors that are attributed to this dramatic increase in childhood obesity cases. A reliance on cars is thought to be a major factor, with children more often driven to school than walking or cycling. A drastic decline in the amount of compulsory physical education in primary and secondary schools is almost certainly a contributor. An increasing reliance on computer games for entertainment in the younger generations is also cited as a major reason. In the past children would have sought entertainment from playing outdoors, engaging in more physical activity. Of course the streets have always been seen as a safer place for children to play in the past than they are now so it could be said that a reliance on computer games may be a reasonable response to social concerns.
However, bad eating habits have been identified as the major cause of childhood obesity. Increasing reliance on convenience food, a lack of proper nutrition in meals, an avoidance of fruit and vegetables and a rise in between-meal snacking are all common problems. A recent focus on unhealthy school meals by TV chef Jamie Oliver highlighted the problem of lack of nutrition in school meals. Pupils were able to buy junk food for lunch on a daily basis with no encouragement from the schools to look to more healthy alternatives. Thankfully since Jamie Oliver’s campaign for schools to take more responsibility for the provision of healthy school meals aired on the BBC, there has been a dramatic shift in the way the primary and secondary education sectors approach the provision of school meals. The government have also addressed the problem officially by releasing the ‘nutritional standards for schools’ – a set of nutritional guidelines that all primary and secondary schools most adhere to by September 2009.

Now According to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, nearly half of American adults report that they do not exercise at all, and seven out of ten do so infrequently. Too many of America’s youth do not exercise at all, are overweight, and have poor dietary habits. “In 1999, 61 percent of the adult population were either overweight or obese and 15% of American children are overweight.” Obesity and being overweight have reached epidemic proportions in the United States. These weight conditions have been linked to increases in serious diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (bronchitis, emphysema, asthma), and diabetes. The good news is that the council states that, “the health of Americans would improve with modest but regular physical activity and better eating habits.” For this reason, the first and second priorities of President Bush’s Healthier US Initiative are: 1. Be Physically Active Each Day and; 2. Eat a Nutritious Diet.
There is probably no better time to start a martial arts program than right now. Every year, when the weather changes, it marks a point of decreased exercise for many Americans as outdoor activities diminish. Combine this with poor eating habits during holidays, it’s no wonder so many people make weight reduction their New Year’s Resolution. Martial arts provides necessary exercise as well as the discipline to make better eating choices.
President Bush’s initiative has a very simple formula: every little bit of e ort counts. The key to becoming ? t and healthy re- lies on the consistency of your fitness plan. “You don’t have to become a marathon runner,” the council states. Martial arts provides year round physical activity to provide your body with routine exercise that can help you reach and maintain appropriate body weight. Reaching this objective statistically improves your chances of avoiding certain diseases, and also positions you as a role model for other adults and children. Not to mention how great you will feel being physically fit.

Type and Genes In some animal species, the shape and size of the individual’s body is largely determined by the shape and size of its parents’ bodies. Many scientists have explored the role of heredity in determining human body shapes. Some researchers argue that obesity has a strong genetic determinant (it tends to run in families). They cite statistics showing that 80 percent of children having two obese parents are also obese. But why is this the case? Can you really blame your parents for your problems with weight?• Twin Studies Studies of identical twins who were separated at birth and raised in different environments have provided us with some of the most conclusive evidence to date that obesity may be an inherited trait. Whether raised in family environments with fat or thin family members, twins with obese natural parents tend to be obese in later life. According to another study, sets of identical twins who were separated and raised in different families and who ate widely different diets still grew up to weigh about the same. So, if you are overweight, you cannot blame it all on your parents for overfeeding you as a child. These studies contain the strongest evidence yet that the genes a person inherits are the major factor determining overweight, leanness, or average weight. Although the exact mechanics remain unknown, it is believed that genes set metabolic rates, influencing how the body handles calories. Some experts believe that this genetic tendency may contribute as much as 25 to 40 percent of the reason for being overweight.• Specific Obesity Genes? In the past decade, more and more research has pointed to the existence of a special “fat gene.” The most promising candidate is the Db gene (for obesity), which is believed to disrupt the body’s “I’ve had enough to eat” signaling system and may prompt individuals to keep eating past the point of being comfortably full. Research on Pima Indians, who have an estimated 75 percent obesity rate and nine in ten who are overweight, seems to point to an Ob gene that is a “thrifty gene.” It is theorized that because their ancestors had to struggle through centuries of famine, their ancestor’s basal metabolic rates slowed, allowing them to store precious fat for survival. They may have passed these genes on to their children, explaining the lower metabolic rates found in Pimas today and their greater propensity for obesity. Scientists have found that they can manipulate mice genes and construct an Ob gene that will invariably lead to fatness in mice and to the development of diabetes II. Many suspect a human counterpart to this gene, but an actual gene formation has yet to be found. In addition, the (Beta)-3 adrenergic-receptor gene has been identified and found in human beings and mice. When mutated, it is thought to impede the body’s ability to bum fat.Although the 1994 discovery of the Ob gene has provided fertile ground for speculation, researchers have since further refined their theories to focus on a protein that the Ob gene may produce, known as Leptin, and a new leptin receptor in the brain. According to these studies, leptin is the chemical that signals the brain when you are full and need to stop eating. Although obese people have adequate amounts of leptin and working leptin receptors, they do not seem to work properly, much like with the diabetic who has adequate insulin but is not able to utilize it properly.Another group of scientists appear to have isolated a more direct route to appetite suppression, a protein called GLP-l, which is known to slow down the passage of food through the intestines to allow the absorption of nutrients. When scientists injected GLP-l into the brains of hungry rats, the rats stopped eating immediately. Are leptin and GLP-l key factors in appetite suppression? It is speculated that leptin and GLP-l might play complementary roles in weight control.

A few years ago, I heard about a very disturbing survey. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the statistical details, but I’ll never forget the point. Someone asked a group of children in a US primary school if they would rather lose an arm or be fat. Some overwhelming percentage (I want to say close to 80 percent) said they would rather lose the arm. Think about that for a second. Our society places such a severe stigma on being overweight that 5-year-old children say they would rather give up an arm than be fat.
There’s so much pressure around us to be thin that it’s easy to forget that optimal body weight really is about our health, and not just our trouser size. But recently, a couple of new studies on health and weight confirmed that maintaining a healthy body weight is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves – and that letting it slide can be the most dangerous.
In one study, the American Medical Association reported that on average, obese people were found to have nearly twice the chronic health problems of people of normal weight. Keep in mind that obesity is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more. (BMI is a mathematical formula that calculates the ratio of height to weight.) It was adopted by the National Institutes of Health in 1998 as the new gold standard in body weight.
BMI’s of 18.5 to 24.9 are considered “normal,” while values of 25 and over are considered overweight. A BMI of 30 or higher ranks as obese. According to the AMA study, about 56 percent of the American population falls into the overweight group. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 19.8 percent of Americans are obese. Before BMI was introduced, the old Metropolitan Life height-and-weight charts were the yardstick and body weights 20 percent or more above the recommended levels were considered obese. Here in the UK things aren’t much better, as we’re getting fatter as a nation and obesity rates are on the increase.
But it was the other study I found absolutely shocking. It was put out by the RAND Institute in Santa Monica and was published in the latest edition of the British journal “Public Health.” Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the study consisted of a telephone survey of 9,585 adults who were asked about their weight, height, smoking and drinking habits, income, quality of life, and if they had any of 17 chronic health problems, including asthma, cancer, diabetes, and heart problems.
The researchers found that the obese people had slightly more health problems than people in poverty, and far more than daily smokers or heavy drinkers, indicating that obesity may be a much greater health risk. Honestly, I was dumb-founded. Smoking, heavy drinking, and poverty – these are three very strong, very negative forces with staggering effects on health. It seems almost unfathomable that being overweight could be more dangerous than they are. Obviously we aren’t saying that smoking or heavy drinking are good for you, but thought the comparison was very powerful.
If you’ve tried to lose weight and feel like you’ve lost the struggle, I can sympathize. Weight is something I’ve struggled with most of my life. So please don’t think I’m giving this advice lightly or think it’s as easy as skipping a serving of potatoes. Being overweight is a complex physical, mental and emotional problem for most of us who struggle with it. But looking at these studies, I realize that the time has to be now. I don’t want to wake up in 10 years and still be saying, “I’ll start tomorrow.”
In recent weeks, I’ve gotten back into an exercise routine that I’d been lax about, given up deserts, and stopped drinking all fizzy drinks – diet and regular.
Trust me. I know how hard it is. There are many mornings when I would rather push the snooze button than get up and get on that treadmill (today was one of them). And, as I said, I’ve given up a lot of my favorite foods recently. But it seems silly to have quit smoking years ago only to learn that a weight problem may end up being even more dangerous for me.
Let’s stop putting it off until tomorrow and start today – right now. It’s the absolute best thing we can do for ourselves – and the people who love us. And as those pounds come off (and they will!), you’ll look great while doing something important for your health.

Statistics have shown that for children between the years of 2 and 5 and adolescents between 12 and 19, the rate of obesity has doubled since the 1970s. For children between the ages of 6 and 11, the rate has tripled. Almost one third of all children today are at risk for becoming overweight. Sixteen percent of them already are.Are boys more prone to rise in child obesity? When it comes to boys and girls, the rates of child obesity are similar. The rates have increased since the 1960s for both sexes. In the last years of the previous century, over 29% of all boys were at risk for becoming overweight, while 27% of all girls struggled with the same problem.Of course, some groups are more affected by this phenomena than others. Among boys, those who are of Mexican American descent tend to have a greater problem with obesity, with over 42% of boys in this group being affected by the problem. Among girls, the problem is more serious for those of African descent. Why childhood obesity should not be taken lightlyThe problem of children being obese is a grave one, in that it can have lasting effects on one’s emotional and physical health. In the year 2000, it was estimated that about a third of all children born in the United States are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes in their lifetimes. These children are developing Type II Diabetes and high blood pressure at an early age. They are placing themselves at increased risk for heart disease and other obesity-related diseases. Their weight also makes them the target of bullies and children who insult and taunt them about their weight. This can ruin their self-esteem and put them at risk for depression.Lack of physical activity – a major cause of child obesityOne of the sad facts of our time is that young people have fewer and fewer chances to be physically active. In elementary and primary schools, quite often there is a lack of space and equipment for serious physical education, not to mention fewer and fewer teachers with specialized training in this area. Children spent the vast majority of their time at school sitting down behind a desk. The vast majority of six to eight year olds are allowed only thirty minutes of regulated physical education in their weekly school curriculums! The game fields and playgrounds are being sold off or abandoned. At home, children are discouraged from playing outside due to their parents’ concerns with safety.Along with lack of physical activity comes the convenience of fast food. There are fast food restaurants virtually around every corner, and they have easy access to snack foods full of saturated fats and sugars. In addition, obese parents are more likely to have obese children. The reason for this is two-fold. First, obese parents probably pass down their poor habits to their children. Second, genetics plays a role in obesity.Individual obesity control plans work best for childrenFor children dealing with obesity, it is best to evaluate the individual’s situation, taking in to consideration environmental, genetic, and metabolic concerns while treating the arising physical and psychological damage that has arisen. An obese child’s eating plan should also come with an exercise plan. Long term counseling is often needed to deal with self esteem issues relating to obesity that can affect the child’s performance in the real world. It’s important for parents to be role models to their children and emphasize the importance of physical activity and healthy eating. Parents can create healthy environments for their children by doing regular physical activities, such as biking, swimming, or walking together. They should encourage their children to participate in sports, dance, martial arts, and etcetera. This allows children to develop an appreciation of physical activity and enjoy exercising. When it comes to eating, parents need to implement diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains. They can make eating enjoyable and healthy by preparing food together and eating together as a family. Fast-food should be limited and reserved for special occasions. Way too often, we reward ourselves for a job well done with food.Child obesity can easily be controlled. The process can be made fulfilling by using creative ideas. Look for other ways to reward your children for doing a great job, such as a special shopping trip or a day with just mom or dad. Not only will the kids feel appreciated, it will contribute to their well being in the long run.

In modern day society the number of kids who are obese has escalated to critical proportions. The reason to this is present-day society is highly dogged by the ills of poverty and the lack of appropriate education for the individuals and the societies as a whole on the dynamics of health and diet. Modern society has been plagued by various negative health conditions which enlist the likes of obesity, cancer and Coronary Heart Diseases, just to mention a few. The proliferation of various epidemics has spurred the search for meaningful and long-term solutions which has led to the importance of nutritional education for individuals and societies as a whole. Authorities have taken various significant thrusts at exploring the dynamics that characterize the importance and essence of nutritional education especially for children in present society. Despite al the grim statistics it is important for you to know that it is your responsibility to keep your toddler healthy. The drive on nutritional education for the young people has been to tap the opportunities that are presented to health practitioners as they face the capacity of the youth and the teenager to engage more into abstract thinking accompanied by the evolving psychological settings. Jamie Stang and Mary Story (2005) notes that adolescence presents an opportune time to drill the youths to examine their eating lifestyles as well determine goals for dietary transformation. Modern day nutrition education for the adolescents must take advantage of the social as well cognitive swings that characterizes adolescent development. The shifts can be the basis for the promotion and embracement for healthier lifestyles of the youths and teenagers. In the USA alone diseases related to inactivity and poor diet and eating habits cost the health care system about $830 million on a yearly basis (Jamie Stang and Mary Story 2005). Some of the diseases that top the list are the cancers, heart diseases and diabetes mellitus among a host of others. Recent researches on the dynamics of nutrition and health have indicated that obesity has escalated to phenomenal epidemic proportions across the globe. Hellmich, N (1992) presents research outcomes of the Australian community as a tip of an iceberg on what characterizes global communities in the dimensions of health and nutrition. The results of the studies cited by the scholar show that for the Australian adults the incidence of obesity as well as that of overweight is rapidly rising. Researches estimate that 20%-25% of the county’s children are either overweight or indeed obese. Researches also indicate that in the 1985-1997period the proportions of school children who are classifiable as obese had risen 3 times whilst the numbers of those categorized as overweight had doubled. The figures have driven authorities to the realization of; and response to the fact that the societal ills that pertain to the link between diet and health must entail the prioritization of children nutrition education. There have been calls from various quarters that the problems of health must be approached holistically with the sole object of extirpating the root causes and not just the symptomatic indications of the mother problem. Various researches conducted have indicated that eating habits are carved in the early stages of human development and have a way of carrying through across childhood through adolescence up to adulthood. What has been established is that the kind of food stuffs that constitute children’s diet will influence the state of their health in the years to come.

Life in today’s fast forwarded world is full of stress and anxiety. There is a never-ending struggle to succeed (or more commonly to exceed the next door) and owing to this, it’s not very uncommon to ignore our health and looks; and while this is certainly understandable to some extent considering the diabolical amount of workload our lifestyle is imposing on us, we have got to ask ourselves sooner or later “How long are we going to be able to continue this?” or perhaps “How long will my body allow me to continue living like this?”. Now let us just take the issue of obesity in USA. Now I don’t suppose you actually need me to tell you how serious the problem is; just take a look around. But perhaps there’s nothing like some statistical data on our hand to convince the omnipresent critics. So let’s have a look at the current trends in obesity in USA:”Today, 64% of all Americans weigh too much and over 30% are obese; in 1988 through 1992, fewer than 56% were overweight and fewer than 23% of American adults were obese.”Source: Exactly as written in “Calories Count – Report of the Working Group on Obesity” by the “U.S. Food and Drug Administration” and if that’s not enough, the statistics for children are even more shocking. Latest researches by the “U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” suggest that 15% of children and teenagers aged 6 to 19 are obese. This is more than double the obesity rates 2 decades ago. One thing is for certain though; as we Americans get heavier, our health suffers. Overweight and obesity increase the possibility of coronary heart disease, type-2 diabetes, and certain cancers to name a few. According to some unofficial sources, at least 400,000 deaths each year may be attributed to obesity!!So we’ve got a lot of statistics. Now what? How do they affect us? What do they mean to us? One thing is obvious; we, as Americans are getting obese and this is bad. As for the problems; apart from the health and medical concerns, there are a lot of economical issues. There are some speculations that the growing obesity and thus the reducing productivity has been a significant, if not major contributor in the Today’s “Weak Market”.And you know what the worst part is? We all know the solution to our problem. But we never do what we must to lose the fat. This is the thing that-for the lack of a better word-bothers me the most. And yeah of course all this hype about obesity has churned out some really ironic circumstances. Some years ago the problem was that the people were not concerned in the least bit about obesity; calling it another “hippies to the rescue” propaganda. But now with all the gyms and supposed magic pills which can reduce your weight at an unbelievable (and medically unhealthy) rate trying to wrangle out any cash they can from the customers, people are spending their hard earned money in the wrong direction to lose their weight. They get caught up in all these cheesy ads like “Hey, take this pill daily and lose xyz KGs of weight in abc days; While eating whatever you were eating already”. Now most people who buy these are not stupid enough to think that this would work the way the marketer says it. But they still buy it because the cost of the pill is nothing compared to the results that are promised. And they feel like they have nothing to lose even if the pills don’t work. This is the mentality that an internet marketer exploits. How do I know? I’ve been one myself for a long time. And trust me; buying “weight-reducing pills” is fine as long they don’t affect your health. But the problem starts creeping in when people get too dependent on these and stop doing what is obvious even to them to lose weight. They keep eating all the junk food at odd times and hope that the pills would work. Hah!!Now let me give you this one piece of advice. You do not need any pills to lose weight. You do not need any heavy “gymming” to lose weight. Those are for hardcore body-builders. I’ll give you a simple three step method to lose all that flab. The first thing you need to do is get your eating habit on a schedule. Now as I said when I started this article, it is difficult with today’s lifestyle to do this, but it is still better than going spending an hour a day in the gym. After you get your eating habits on track, it’s time to stop eating garbage. We all know that all these fries and pizzas we eat are going to end up as fat in our hips, but we just can’t control ourselves. And I’m not going to waste any of our time trying to convince you to not eat it, because you’ve probably heard anything I have to say to you a lot of times. But you know you’ve got to do this sooner or later. So well, do it. The final step is….. Enjoy your slim body and never go back to that flab again. That’s all. Of course you can spice this up a little by adding a little exercise. But didn’t I tell you we all knew the answer all along. So let me finish this off with this: Repeat after me: Obesity is bad. I know how to lose my fat. I do NOT need some stupid pill offered by some cheesy guy on how to lose weight. I need to stop cramming my mouth with junk and I’m going to do this starting right now. Congratulations, you are on your way to what you dreamt of. But I’ll tell you one thing though; I’m not making any friends with the McDonald’s Joker Ronald after this.

Statistics in the United States indicate that obesity and rates of people being overweight have reached epidemic proportions. 11% of children, for example, are obese, according to the World Heart Federation Fact Sheet, 2002. 50% of women aged 20 to 74 are overweight or obese, according to The National Women’s Health Information Center. The statistics for men in all age groups are no better. A weight loss solution is needed.
Being overweight carries certain health risks, the main one being heart disease and the possibility of heart attacks. Of course, the determination of being overweight must be left to a doctor as everyone’s body is different because of fat and muscle ratio to body weight. So don’t automatically try dieting if you are some 20 pounds overweight; get your doctor to establish the fact beforehand that a weight loss solution is needed.
Don’t make the mistake of following traditional ways of trying to lose weight. There is no need to drastically lower your calorie intake, or to virtually starve yourself, combined with vigorous exercise. Use the tried and successful diet that involves eating 4 meals a day and includes moderate exercise only. (Note, though, that in one aspect of the diet you don’t even have to exercise). You need never go hungry following this eating style as a wide variety of food is available.
The “Shifting Calories” eating style encourages shifting certain calories eaten and using an irregular eating pattern. It is the irregularity of the system that shocks the body into raising its metabolism and you lose weight. Thousands of people worldwide can attest to the success of this diet plan.
In the Shifting Calories system certain types of calories are manipulated at each meal. Fat calories are not manipulated, just carbs and proteins. You are presented with a large list of foods and then shown how to manipulate these to gain maximum weight loss. There is no skimping at meal times; you eat only until you are satisfied. You don’t overeat, of course, but you stop short of being “full”.
You are shown the exact foods that you need to rotate each day. You can eat the foods in any order, as long as you follow the recommended carbs and proteins combinations. To make it even easier for the dieter, an online diet generator will generate your daily menu for you!
This program dismisses the contradictory diet hype you have heard over the years, like “low carbs” and “low fat”. It emphasizes the danger of sugar and how we should be looking for this in foods. Sugar is a bigger danger than fat and a large contributor to weight gain.
The danger of intense aerobic work-outs is discussed. How these work-outs burn mainly carbs, not fat. Over-exerting yourself elevates your breathing and heart rate and your body will then burn mainly carbs. Slightly elevating your breathing and heart rate, though, through a moderate exercise like walking, will burn stored body fat.
The Shifting Calories plan, then, could be an effective and permanent weight loss solution.

Obesity is at epidemic levels in America today. It seems to affect the entire spectrum of ages, nationalities and both sexes. Look at these shocking numbers…* 59 million Americans are considered overweight.* 40 million Americans are obese.* 3 million Americans are “morbidly” obese.Every day millions of us stand in front of our mirrors and bemoan the fact that we are overweight and out of shape. Yet most of us will go eat the rest of the chocolate cake to console ourselves – rather than take action to get control of our weight!Maybe these five reasons to actually start a weight loss program – reasons that could actually save your life – will help encourage you…
Reason #1: You’ll live longer.Obesity is actually responsible for more early deaths than smoking. For the first time in a thousand years, life expectancy is expected to drop mainly because of obesity. It looks like slimming down CAN add more years to your life!Reason #2: You’ll be healthier longer.Statistics prove that people who are overweight, obese, or morbidly obese begin struggling with serious health problems at a much earlier age than those who maintain a normal weight. We now have children with high blood pressure due to obesity.Reason #3: You’ll look better.Nobody can argue this one. The fact is that “fluffy” is out and “thin” is in. There was a time when only the very wealthy could afford to be fat – being overweight was considered attractive! We have to face the fact that today, it’s much more socially and psychologically acceptable to look and feel great fit. It’s a matter of mental and well as physical health. Reason #4: You’ll enjoy life more.Obese people are more inclined to be depressed and stressed out than their thinner and fitter counterparts. “Fat and jolly” is a myth. “Fat and miserable” is more like it, and the added mental stress of being overweight can shave years off your lifespan.Reason #5: You’ll be proud of yourself.Overweight people often lose their self-pride. They might put on a “happy face” and appear to ooze confidence, but they don’t feel that way inside. When overweight people lose weight and get fit, they are as proud of themselves as those who kick the smoking habit or kick a drug habit.
